Susan grew up in a navy household with postings in Japan and California. When the household was stationed at West Level, New York she graduated from Highland Falls Excessive Faculty in 1957. She attended Wilson School, Chambersburg, Pennsylvania from 1957 to 1959. On June 20, 1959 she married West Level graduate, 2nd Lt William Collins Buell V at West Level, New York.
